THANK YOU
With boundless gratitude for your impactful support, we share UtahPresents’ Annual Report and reflect on the inspiring journey of our 2023-2024 season.
Thanks to your generosity, UtahPresents continued to thrive as a hub for creativity and connection, reaching over 36,000 individuals through a diverse array of performances, cultural events, and educational experiences. From thought-provoking productions to community-driven collaborations, our programming expanded horizons and brought us closer together.
As we head into a new year, I am filled with excitement about the path ahead. With your continued partnership, we will build on the momentum of our 2023-24 season to reach new heights.
Thank you for being part of the tremendous community that keeps UtahPresents going. Onwards!
Yours,
Chloe Jones
Executive Director, UtahPresents
UtahPresents remains dedicated to introducing diverse, transformative artists to Utah with a steadfast commitment to community outreach. We aspire to broad cultural representation in our programming because we want all Utahns to see themselves reflected. We believe everyone—children, university students, and people from all walks of life—deserves access to cutting-edge arts.
As a board member for seven years, I am increasingly inspired by UtahPresents. And as someone whose childhood was immeasurably enriched by the arts, I especially value the opportunities UtahPresents creates for young people. During our 2023-2024 season, K-12 students from over half of Utah’s school districts benefited from our matinee program.
Thank you for joining us in championing creativity within our community. You bring our programming to life.
Sincerely,
Tiana Hood
Chair, UtahPresents Advisory Board
Season Accomplishments
Vibrant Programming: According to many of you, the 2023-2024 season was one of our best yet! Performances were given from an incredible range of artists. We presented the Utah debut of Australia’s Circa, a group leading the way in contemporary circus. We welcomed Step Afrika! to the stage at Kingsbury Hall on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a celebration of African American dance. Bhangra fusion band Red Baraat had everyone grooving at their ‘Festival of Colors’ show for the Indian holiday of Holi. University of Utah students had opportunities to perform in six different productions. And so much more!
Stewardship of Kingsbury Hall: Our iconic theater was bustling with UtahPresents productions, as well as campus and community events. Excitingly, we completed the renovation of the Marian and Barry Ingham Artists Entrance. This space doubles as the lobby for our Stage Door Series that seats the audience on the stage, creating an intimate venue within Kingsbury Hall.
Financial Standing: Despite playing catch up from pandemic years and other financial challenges in 2023-24, we finished the fiscal year strong. See below for a breakdown of our fiscal year 2024 operating budget. Of note, donations from individuals and corporations increased by 54% from fiscal year 2023 to fiscal year 2024. This growth in contributed revenue helped us maintain affordable ticket pricing, with an average ticket price in 2023-24 of $22.07.
ReachUP Highlights
ReachUP is UtahPresents’ community outreach program, connecting topflight artists from around the world to Utahns of all ages and backgrounds.
We take pride in bringing performers out of the theater and into classrooms, neighborhood centers, and other community spaces. Each year, we partner with a growing network of University of Utah colleagues and local organizations to deliver ReachUP. In 2023-2024, our partners included the Sustainability Office and American Indian Resource Center on campus, Promise South Salt Lake, Utah Punjabi Arts Academy, Save Our Great Salt Lake, and 25 other organizations.
Student matinees are a core component of ReachUP. In the 2023-24 season, K-12 students from 29 of Utah’s 42 school districts attended our matinees as part of the school-day, traveling from as far as Logan and Nebo. Many of these students were coming to Kingsbury Hall for the first time.
One highlight from last year’s ReachUP programming was a week of community engagement with Music From The Sole, a tap dance and live music company that celebrates tap’s Afro-Diasporic roots. In March 2024, UtahPresents brought Music From The Sole to Utah for the first time. In addition to performing both a student matinee and public performance at Kingsbury Hall, the artists taught free community workshops including an Afro-Diasporic Dance Exchange at Sorenson Unity Center. The Dance Exchange featured local organizations, Bomba Marilé and Samba Fogo, demonstrating and teaching alongside Music From The Sole. Attendees ranged in age from nine months to 79 and represented many communities in Salt Lake.
