MISSION
UtahPresents, the multi-disciplinary presenter at the University of Utah, brings diverse artistic and cultural experiences to campus and the region, exploring and enriching the human experience through the lens of creativity and the arts. As stewards of the iconic Kingsbury Hall, we provide a valuable gathering space for community events and campus partners. Through a breadth of collaborations, UtahPresents encourages curiosity, enhances cultural vibrancy, and creates connections beyond the stage.
PURPOSE OF REQUEST
Gordon and Connie Hanks have been at the forefront of the Salt Lake City jazz music scene since 1994. They have increased local awareness, appreciation, and popularity of jazz. They produced nearly 250 concerts with over 500 of the world’s best jazz artists through JazzSLC, proving the popularity of jazz in Salt Lake City.
After the program’s last season, UtahPresents partnered with the Hanks to introduce Jazz at Kingsbury Hall, a series within the UtahPresents season. 2024-25 was incredibly successful, featuring incredible artists like nine-time Grammy Award-winner Christian McBride and New-Orleans-native Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.
We are thrilled to be bringing back Jazz at Kingsbury Hall for UtahPresents 10th Anniversary Season in 2025-26. The upcoming season’s series will feature such artists as 10-time GRAMMY award-winner Arturo Sandoval, as well as prodigy pianist Emmet Cohen with his special project celebrating Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
Crucial to UtahPresents’ mission is bringing campus arts together with the broader creative community. As part of this series, we will connect the musicians with jazz students from the university’s School of Music, providing the students with opportunities to interact closely with celebrated professional artists. Offerings for students will include workshops/masterclasses and potentially the opportunity to perform at UtahPresents with the artists.
